Why does consistency matter more than intensity?

Consistency over intensity is often what makes the biggest difference when building a sustainable movement practice.

Have you ever started exercising full of motivation… only to stop again?

It happens to so many of us!

You decide that this will be the week you finally prioritise your health. You feel motivated, make a plan and promise yourself that this time will be different. For a little while everything goes well, then work becomes busier, family commitments take over or life simply gets in the way. Before long you miss a class, then another, and suddenly it feels as though you’ve fallen back to where you started.

If this sounds familiar, you’re certainly not alone. Many people believe the hardest part is finding the motivation to begin, but in reality the biggest challenge is often creating a routine that comfortably fits into everyday life.

One of the biggest misconceptions about exercise is that every workout needs to be intense to make a difference. While challenging yourself can absolutely have its place, long-term progress is usually built through small, consistent actions that are realistic enough to continue week after week.

Attending one class this week, returning again next week and gradually building movement into your routine may not feel like a major achievement at first, however these small steps slowly become lasting habits. Over time those habits often have a much greater impact than trying to do everything at once.

When it comes to building a sustainable movement practice, consistency over intensity often matters more than pushing yourself to the limit every now and then. Regular movement can also support both physical and mental wellbeing, with the World Health Organization highlighting the benefits of regular physical activity across different stages of life.

The biggest changes often happen outside the studio

When people begin moving more regularly, they often hope to become stronger or more flexible, and while those improvements certainly happen, many are surprised by the everyday changes they notice along the way.

Getting up from the floor feels easier. Carrying the shopping becomes less tiring. Walking around Richmond, travelling on holiday or spending time with family begins to feel more comfortable and enjoyable. You may even find yourself saying yes to activities you once avoided because your body feels more capable and confident.

These are often the moments that remind us why consistency matters. The benefits of regular movement aren’t only measured by what happens during a class, but by how much easier everyday life begins to feel.

Many of us have also grown up believing that if we aren’t completely exhausted after exercising, we haven’t worked hard enough. Unfortunately, that mindset can make movement feel overwhelming, leaving people sore, frustrated or discouraged from returning the following week.

Finding movement that feels enjoyable, supportive and sustainable makes all the difference. When exercise becomes something you genuinely look forward to, showing up consistently becomes much easier, and consistency is where meaningful progress begins.

Why consistency over intensity creates lasting results

At Proformer Pilates Richmond, we believe movement should support your body and fit comfortably into your lifestyle. Our small group Reformer Pilates classes are designed to meet you where you are, whether you’re returning to exercise after time away, managing stiffness or simply wanting to continue moving confidently as you age.

Every person arrives with different goals, experiences and abilities, which is why our instructors guide each class with options that can be adapted to suit your body. Rather than encouraging you to push harder for the sake of it, we focus on helping you move well, build confidence and enjoy the process.

There is no perfect pace for building a healthy movement routine. Some people enjoy attending once a week, while others choose to come more often as their confidence grows. What matters most is consistency over intensity that feels realistic for your life and one that you can continue enjoying over the months and years ahead.

Healthy ageing isn’t about completing the hardest workout or chasing perfection, it is about continuing to move in ways that help you feel strong, capable and confident in everyday life. Every class is another opportunity to support your wellbeing, and every visit contributes to habits that can make a meaningful difference over time.

If you are looking for a welcoming and supportive place to build a movement routine that works for you, we would love to welcome you to Proformer Pilates. Our experienced team is here to support your journey and help you find a class that feels right for you.
